Delicious Basil

sweet basil

I love basil.  Its smell is so unique and aromatic. It also tastes great in so many dishes from Pho to spaghetti sauce.  If you enjoy cooking, fresh  basil in the garden is a must have.  Nothing beats walking out on my deck and picking a fresh bunch of sweet basil. It is very easy to grow and it takes a minimal effort for the amount of fresh herbs it yields.

For the past two summers (09,10) I have grown the standard Sweet Basil and the less common variety African Blue Basil. The containers I use for my basil are rather large so my basil plants get pretty huge in no time.  I usually allow the plants to flower because I like how it dresses up the plants.  There are more than enough basil leaves for my cooking so I do not mind the plants flowering This summer I will bypass growing the African Blue Basil variety and just stick to the Sweet Basil.  I will research some good companion herbs to basil…possibly cilantro or sage or both 😉

What say you?
